Modder's Interview: GrumblingVomit

Interview with GrumblingVomit

How long have you been modding?

Since the 2020 May Modathon Month. My first mod ever was Esroniet: . While it's a mess, I am proud of the ambition I had, even if the execution was lacking.

How do you approach modding?

I am inspired by the game, but also the modding community. I think some of my best mods are just "GV's take on someone else's idea". I really try to focus on attention to detail: Player-reactivity, logical conclusions, and little details that make the mod blend in and not feel "moddy" is my goal.

What's your favourite thing about modding?

It can be a low barrier of entry for aspiring game developers to test out ideas, get feedback, learn how to communicate with a user-base, etc. in a low-stakes environment. Wonderful for learning.

What's your favourite mod that you've made so far?

No question, Roaring Arena: . In my mind, it feels like the original vision of TES I: Arena.

Is there a mod you are especially proud of?

Morrowind Interiors Project: There's nothing quite like watching the sunset and hearing a silt strider from indoors, seeing the rain fall, etc. Makes Morrowind feel totally different, but the same at the same time, if that makes any sense.

Are you working on a mod these days?

I like to always have a side mod cooking in the background to avoid Tamriel Rebuilt burnout (which I make creature animations for). I just released Repopulated Creatures so now that that's out I need to update my other Tamriel Data-dependent mods .

How much do you play Morrowind, not counting play testing?

I don't, sadly. I start to play, think of a way I could make one of my mods better, and then get sidetracked updating it. One of these days, I will run out of ideas for mod updates and then finally get to play the game.

How did you discover Morrowind?

I played so much Oblivion and Skyrim that a friend got me Morrowind. I had heard of it, but never really thought to give it a try until then.

Repopulated Waters

What makes Morrowind special for you?

The slow moments. Figuring out directions, listening to an NPC tell you something unimportant but believable, reading books in game, Morrowind really lets you bathe yourself in its world, soak it all in. (I know I'm a heretic for saying this, but I love playing with the music off).

What are the mods you simply cannot play without?

Expansion Delay, Glow in the Dahrk, Graphic Herbalism, and my own Morrowind Interiors Project.

Are there any underrated mods that you really enjoy?

Consistent Eyes for Elves. Just love consistency.

Do you play other games?

Tons of them. While I try to play some of the bigger main-stream gems (Baldur's Gate 3 was phenomenal), I'm always combing through places like Itch and oddly-specific YouTube channels to find truly unique gaming experiences. Someone's always got a unique vision for a one-of-a-kind experience, just need to be able to find it.

Do you mod other games?

I don't, thankfully. I've been tempted many times, but it's for the best. I have hobbies other than modding and modding Morrowind takes more than its fair share of my free time.

And by the way, what's the story behind your user name?

I gave myself an intentionally terrible name as an ego check. I don't ever want to take myself too seriously, just focus on making the mods I want to play.
